Los Banos Rotary Club History A crowd of more than 150 persons were in attendance at the first postwar High School Coaches' Night program staged by the 20-30 Club at the D.E.S. Hall Tuesday evening, in cooperation with the Lions and Rotary clubs. Quite informal and highly interesting, the program proper was capably handled by 20-30ian Rocco Pernetti, who was introduced by 20-30 President George Souza. Visiting coaches, including Pix Pierson, line coach at Fresno State College, and Kenny Gleason, also of Fresno State, were introduced and spoke briefly concerning things pertinent to football in general and their own teams in particular. Pierson, after picking Notre Dame as the number one team in the country, said Fresno State will also have a good team . . . a team that in ordinary years would be considered outstanding but that this year is unpredictable because of the fact that all college teams will be stronger this year than for several years past, with many veterans back in school again following the war. Other
coaches called upon included Wm. Joerg, athletic director at Merced high school,
varsity coach Carl Hoberg and "B" squad coach Bill Stevinson, both of
Merced; Coach Hugh Staley Jr. of Gustine; Coach Steve Varich of Chowchilla; Coach
Ike Frankian of Dos Palos; Coach Carlyle Loftin of Los Banos; sportswriter Danny
O'Neill of the Merced Sun-Star, and local high school principal L. J. Spindt. Page approved 8-2009 by GL © Copyright 2009 by Los Banos Enterprise, Rotary Club 585 & Memorable Places Web Design of Los Banos | |||||
