Rotarians Told Of Dairy Problems
Bill Anderson, manager of the Western Dairymen Association, a statewide organization of milk producers, told members of the local Rotary Club Tuesday noon something of the work the WDA is doing to protect the interests of the dairy industry, and of threatening legislation which, if passed by the state legislature, would be damaging to the producers.
He reviewed briefly the current successful fight to stop Senate Bill 300, which would permit manufacture of Mellorine, an imitation ice cream made mostly of vegetable oils, in the same plants that manufacture pure ice cream. Anderson said the WDA, working closely with Challenge Creameries, conducted a statewide fight on the issue, bringing the facts to the people at a series of public meetings throughout the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys. The resultant flood of letters and telegrams to senators and assemblymen was sufficient to cause withdrawal of the proposed bill by the author, Senator Desmond.
Anderson said the Association has become a constructive, serious purposed organization of important political strength, which will be ever watchful in protecting the best interests of the dairy industry, and said that increased support of the organization by local dairymen would be helpful and wise.
Charles Kaljian, past president of Rotary, presided at the luncheon in the absence of President Frank Peluso, who has the flue. Kaljian announced that the regular meeting next week will be an evening meeting with the Lions Club, at the grammar school cafeteria, when the high school basketball teams will be honored.
