Spina Tells Of Eastern Trip
Rollo Spina, local dairyman and purebred Hostein Breeder, Tuesday noon gave members of the Rotary Club a brief resume of his recent trip to Chicago, where as a member of the six man national Youth Program Committee, he attended a two day conference called to formulate recommendations for a national youth activity program. The program will be submitted for considerations to the members of the American Holstein Friesian Assn. at their annual convention.
One of the most important of the recommendations, Spina said, was the proposal for a Junior All-American contest to be conducted on a national basis on the same plan as the present Senior All-American contest.
Another recommendation of importance was to urge Holstein Association groups throughout the country to take an increased interest in junior division activities, and to work with F.F.A. and 4-H Club groups to encourage increased interest in purebred Holstein cattle.
Spina also told of a day spent at the Curtiss Candy Farms at Cary, Ill., where he was particularly interested in the Farms' artificial insemination program and stud service. This service, he said, has now been developed to the point where seman collected at the farm is refrigerated and rushed by plane to all parts of the country within 24 hours. Seman collected there one morning is available in Los Banos the following morning.
Preceding Spina's talk, Judge D. Oliver Germino, secretary of the Merced County Spring Fair and Livestock Show, presented him with the Rotary Perpetual Trophy and accompanying miniature. In recognition of his outstanding achievement at the recent Spring Fair here. The award is given each year in the senior division to the outstanding fair exhibitor.
Germino paid high compliment to Spina, both for his participation and interest in the fair and for his cooperative practice of making his purebred Holstein calves available to junior exhibitors of this community. Germino said the Rancho Banos herd is recognized as one of the top herds in the nation, and pointed out that animals sold by Spina to local F.F.A. and 4-H boys placed high in the fair this spring.
C. W. Bates, Spring Fair manager and program chairman Tuesday, presented Spina with the Western Dairymen's Union trophy, awarded for outstanding herd shown at the fair. The Rancho Banos Holsteins, owned by Rollo and his brother, Sam, topped the show with a total of 530 points.
